Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi took the holy water of Triveni Sangam from the occasion of Maha Kumbh during his Mauritius visit and this water was poured into the holy Ganga Talab of Mauritius on 12 March. Earlier, ten years ago in 2015, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Mauritius, he took Ganga water from his parliamentary constituency Varanasi with him, which was poured into the holy Ganga Talab on 12 March 2015.

The Prime Minister's Mauritius visit has once again brought Ganga Talab into discussion. Although Ganga Talab is located in Mauritius, about five thousand kilometers away from India, but it is related to the river Ganga and it is also named Ganga Talab. This holy Ganga Talab located in Mauritius is an important pilgrimage of Hindu culture due to propagating the glory of the river Ganga.

Ganga Talab is also known as Ganga Lake and Grand Basin. It is situated in the Savane district of Mauritius on a deserted mountain crater, i.e. a dormant volcano, at a height of about 550 meters above sea level. It is considered to be the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage of Mauritius. Huge statues of Shri Ganesh, Lord Shiva, Goddess Ganga and Lord Hanuman are also installed on the banks of the pond. The Shiv idol present here is 108 feet high. It is the tallest statue of Mauritius which was inaugurated in the year 2007.

This is the only temple in Mauritius where Bhairo Baba is installed inside the temple along with the Shiv family in the form of a dog. During Shivratri, pilgrims walk barefoot from their homes to the pond. Navratri is also celebrated here in a grand manner.

The first group of pilgrims reached Ganga pond in 1898 under the leadership of Pandit Giri Gossen of Terre Rouge from Tiriolet village. In 1897, two priests saw in their dreams that the water of the Grand Bassin lake originated from Jahanvi and became a part of the Ganges. The priests told people about this dream and this thing spread all over Mauritius. In the same year, pilgrims walked to the Grand Bassin, took water from the pond and offered it to Lord Shiva on the occasion of Mahashivratri.

This Ganga talab is managed by Mauritius Sanatan Dharma Mandir Sansthan and Hindu Mahasabha. Since then, it has become a tradition that every year on the occasion of Shivratri, devotees walk to the Ganga pond. This lake was earlier also known as Pari Talab. In 1998, it was declared a holy lake. In 1972, the then Prime Minister of Mauritius Shivsagar Ramgoolam took Ganga water from Gaumukh and mixed that water in this Grand Bassin. The holy water of the Ganga river was mixed to establish a symbolic connection with the Ganga pond. During this time, the name of this lake was changed to Ganga Talab. Earlier, this lake was also known as Groon Basse.

At present, the residents of Mauritius consider Ganga Talab as sacred as Ganga and worship it. For the people of Mauritius, Ganga Talab is the center of religious, spiritual, cultural and emotional connection with India and Ganga River.

गंगा तालाब

भारत के प्रधानमंत्री श्री नरेंद्र मोदी अपनी मॉरिशस यात्रा में महाकुंभ के अवसर से त्रिवेणी संगम का पवित्र जल लेकर गए और इस जल को मॉरिशस के पवित्र गंगा तालाब में 12 मार्च को डाला गया। इससे पहले दस वर्ष पूर्व 2015 में जब प्रधानमंत्री श्री नरेंद्र मोदी मॉरिशस की यात्रा पर गए थे तो उस समय अपने साथ अपने संसदीय क्षेत्र वाराणसी से गंगा जल लेकर गए थे जिसको कि 12 मार्च, 2015 को पवित्र गंगा तालाब में डाला था।

प्रधानमंत्री की मॉरिशस यात्रा ने एक बार पुनः गंगा तालाब को चर्चा में ला दिया है। यूं तो गंगा तालाब भारत से लगभग पांच हजार किलोमीटर दूर मॉरिशस देश में स्थित है लेकिन इसका संबंध गंगा नदी से है और इसका नाम भी गंगा तालाब रखा गया है। गंगा नदी की महिमा को प्रचारित करने के चलते मॉरिशस में स्थित यह पवित्र गंगा तालाब हिन्दु संस्कृति का महत्वपूर्ण तीर्थ है।

गंगा तालाब को गंगा की झील तथा ग्रांड बेसिन के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। यह मॉरिशस देश के सावन जिले में एक सुनसान पहाड़ी क्रेटर अर्थात एक शांत ज्वालामुखी पर समुन्द्र तल से लगभग 550 मीटर की उंचाई पर मौजूद है। इसे मॉरिशस का सबसे पवित्र हिन्दु तीर्थ माना जाता है। तालाब किनारे श्री गणेश, भगवान शिव, देवी गंगा व भगवान हनुमान की विशाल मूर्तियां भी लगी हैं। यहां मौजूद शिवमूर्ति 108 फीट उंची है। यह मॉरिशस की सबसे उंची प्रतिमा है जिसका उदघाटन वर्ष 2007 में किया गया था।

यह मॉरिशस का एकमात्र मन्दिर है जहां भैरो बाबा कुत्ते के रूप में शिव परिवार के साथ मन्दिर के अन्दर प्रतिष्ठित हैं। शिवरात्रि के दौरान तीर्थ यात्री तालाब तक अपने घरों से नंगे पैर पैदल चलकर जाते हैं। यहां नवरात्रों को भी भव्य तरीके से मनाया जाता है।

गंगा तालाब पर पहला तीर्थ यात्रियों का जत्था टिरियोलेट गांव से टेरे रूज के पण्डित गिरी गोस्सेन के नेतृत्व में सन् 1898 में पहुंचा था। सन् 1897 में दो पुजारियों ने सपने में देखा कि ग्रैंड बेसिन की झील का जल जहान्वी से उत्पन्न हुआ और गंगा जी का एक भाग बन गया। उन पुजारियों ने लोगों को इस सपने के बारे में बताया और इस तरह यह बात पूरे मॉरिशस में फैल गई। उसी वर्ष तीर्थयात्री ग्रैंड बेसिन तक पैदल चलकर गए, तालाब में से जल लिया और महाशिवरात्रि के पर्व पर शिवजी को अर्पित किया।

इस गंगा तालाब का संचालन मॉरिशस सनातन धर्म मन्दिर संस्थान और हिन्दु महासभा करती है। तभी से यह परम्परा बन गई है कि प्रत्येक वर्ष शिवरात्री के अवसर पर श्रृद्धालु गंगा तालाब तक पैदल यात्रा करते हैं। इस झील को पहले परी तालाब के नाम से भी जाना जाता था। सन् 1998 में इसे पवित्र झील घोषित किया गया था। सन् 1972 में मॉरिशस के तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री शिवसागर रामगुलाम गौमुख से गंगा जल लेकर गए थे और उस जल को ले जाकर इस ग्रैंड बेसिन में मिलाया था। गंगा नदी का पवित्र जल गंगा तालाब से प्रतीकात्मक संबंध स्थापित करने के लिए मिश्रित किया गया था। इस दौरान ही इस झील का नाम बदलकर गंगा तालाब रखा गया था। इससे पहले इस तालाब को ग्रों बास्से के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।

वर्तमान समय में मॉरिशस के निवासी गंगा तालाब को गंगा की तरह ही पवित्र मानते है और इसकी पूजा करते हैं। मॉरिशस वासियों के लिए गंगा तालाब भारत व गंगा नदी से धार्मिक, आध्यात्मिक, सांस्कृतिक एवं भावनात्मक जुड़ा
