Kotdwar : Khoh and Givin River
Riverman of India
Sep 13 2024
The old town of Kotdwar was situated at the confluence of the Khoh and Givin Shot rivers. After the construction of the railway line in 1897, the town gradually started moving towards the right, and started developing towards the western side of the Khoh river. In 1901, Kotdwar was given the status of a town and in the first census of the same year, the population of the town was 1029. In 1909, the road connecting Kotdwar to Lansdowne was
constructed. After this, due to the mutual development of Lansdowne and Dogadda towns, there was a lot of migration in Kotdwar, and in 1921 the population of Kotdwar was reduced to only 396; due to which in 1921 itself the town was declassified and declared a village.
In 1940-41, Kotdwar was like a small village. The town area developed considerably during the Second World War, and was again declared a 'Notified Area' in 1949. In 1951 the Kotdwar Municipality was established, and in 1951-55 the chief engineer of the municipality, K.C. Mathur, prepared the first master plan of the town. Under this master plan the areas around the railway station were developed first, and then the town was gradually extended northwards on both sides of the Badrinath road.
